Devoted to Prayer?

By Julia Fowler, Worship Arts Pastor

The practice of praying is as old as the scriptures themselves, actually one could say it has always existed.  I see evidence of this found throughout the scriptures and starting with verse 3 of the first chapter in Genesis.  It reads, “And God said, “Let there be light”.  Who was God talking too?  The word prayer is actually defined as the act of addressing God.  We believe that God is three persons in one – made up of the Spirit Holy, God the Father, and the Son.  These three personhood dwell perfectly together, complimenting, mirroring, making up the only perfectly symbiotic relationship that has ever existed – the personhoods of God are benefited by one another!  It’s really quite amazing to even consider.  So again who was God speaking too, I believe He was speaking to the other persons of the trinity – or in laymen’s terms, He was talking to Himself! Briefly I just want to draw your attention to just a few verses of scripture found in the New Testament and ask you to consider whether or not you think you are devoted to prayer?

Acts 2:42 – “They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

Romans 12:12 – “rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer…”

Acts 1:14  - (after the ascension of Jesus while the e disciples were waiting in Jerusalem for the outpouring of the Spirit), "These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers."

Acts 2:42  - (Of the early converts in Jerusalem), "They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

Acts 6:4  - (The apostles say), "But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

Colossians 4:2  - (Paul says to all of us), "Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert20in it with an attitude of thanksgiving."

If God’s perfect relationship cornerstones on communication and relationship than is it any wonder he should desire to have that same type of fellowship with us?
