Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast

By Julia Fowler, Worship Arts Pastor

“There is no use trying,” said Alice.  “One can’t believe impossible things.”  “I dare say you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen.  “When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”  - Lewis Carroll

This simple quote comes from the familiar story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.  I’ve read it several times in my youth but stumbled across this passage again just this week.  I wonder sometimes really what holds us back from dreaming about the impossible.  Is it that we’ve lost our ability to dream or has that ability truly been diminished as a result of our option-less culture.   I don’t believe our ability to dream has been lost, but I do believe we have become lazy at exercising our creativity.

The best part of this statement by the Queen is the playful and yet serious candor with which she challenges Alice’s thinking.  When she replies with her goal to think “as many as six impossible things before breakfast” my response is to chuckle, followed by a moment of true consideration: what if I did that every day?  What impossible things could I think of before breakfast and how would that impact the way I responded to or lived within the moments that would follow.

Our God is a God of impossibilities – we say it but I often find myself challenged to truly believe it.  Perhaps this once we could take some Godly advice from this dear Queen and put our creativity to the test.  Dare to think of some impossible things and then take notice of how they transform into the realm of possibility.  Ask the ultimate Creator to inspire you today!
